§ Use daily drill activities to help with memorizing facts {addition, subtraction, multiplication}. Drill everyday for only 10 minutes. Drill while waiting in the line at the grocery store, in the car, etc.} Work on one fact family at a time. Then build on what is known. KEEP IT FUN! Reward successes with positive encouragement, a wink, a smile, etc. § Drill 5th graders in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students should know facts by recall ~ without using fingers. § If having difficulty with lining written problems up on paper, provide graph paper for homework assignments or turn notebook paper sideways. § Show how math is used in daily life: comparing prices at the grocery store, checkbook balancing, determining how much food costs per serving, etc. § Talk about how math is used in the work place. § Have different types of clocks in the household: digital and standard clock face. § Practice skip counting by the following: 2, 5, 10. Start at different places. § Play math games like: Uno, S’math, Math Bingo, computer math games § Count money and practice counting back change
